Clocks in an eclectic home

Our home is a very eclectic home. I have lots of furniture that was given to me as “hand me downs” from my folks when they moved from one home to another at about the same time that I was establishing my first apartment. Then there are a few pieces that I bought at thrift stores, because I needed them and was on a tight budget. Then I got married, and my hubby brought in HIS hand me downs and thrift store finds. From time to time we find we need something (because our old piece finally breaks or wears out) and actually can afford to buy new, so sometimes we buy new. But mostly we hunt for bargains at thrift stores – frugality is in our blood, and in this horrible economy I just have a hard time buying “new” anything if I can find something used that still has a lot of life in it. I call our decorating style “Early Marriage.” People with “class” call it “eclectic.”

I was reading a blog recently about how clocks help define an eclectic space. It got me thinking about buying some clocks; mantel clocks specifically to help decorate the house a little bit. I was thinking about how I’d like to buy a Keepsake Mantel Clock from 1-800-4clocks.com to put in the living room above the fireplace. I could keep the key to the propane fireplace in one of the drawers! I’d like that a lot. I’ve tried buying used clocks in the past, and found that the ones that I buy are usually broken, so this is something that I WOULD definitely splurge on and buy it new!

Graduations

I went to a local high school graduation ceremony last night, to show support for one of my nephews who was graduating.

I want to comment on a couple of things that I noticed.  First of all, I was appalled by how many parents let their young elementary aged school girls dress like street walkers.

Second of all, even though I know that it was “all in fun” I thought it was downright disrespectful to the speakers of the ceremony for the graduating class was bouncing beach balls around.  There were a lot of people who worked really hard to get to the point of graduating with high honors and getting great scholarships, and having other kids disrespecting them by bouncing beach balls around during their speeches simply disgusted me.  They should be ashamed of themselves!  There is a time and place for everything, and the  after-graduation  party was the time and place for that kind of thing.
