Green

A new website

My friend Linda wants to start a Personal Chef business.  She’s been doing a lot of research about it and thinks that there would be a good market for it where she lives.  She’s always loved to cook, and I have to admit that she’s never cooked a meal that I didn’t like!  I think that’s a great idea for a business for her!  So she’s in the process of getting set up with marketing and planning her service contracts, etc.

She asked me to help her to put up her website.  So I’ve arranged to get her URL for her and am now looking into the right website hosting service for her to use.

I like the webhostinggeeks.com website because they rank and rate a lot of the best hosting services.  I especially like their green webhosting reviews; I want to throw business to any company that is working proactively towards improving our environment!

I like how they explain what green webhosting is, and how it can help protect our environment.  Their list of green hosting companies shows some are wind or solar powered, some are carbon neutral, and some claim to be 300% green.  And I find it very appealing that the rates for these green website hosting companies are very reasonable.

Sinking ships

I was reading an article on the Time.com website about how abandoned ships are damaging the environment. That article talked about how a lot of fishing vessels that were sunk (either on purpose or accident) still having fishing gear on board and the fishing gear (nets and traps) continue to “fish” forever. The article also talked about how sunken vessels leach iron and fuels into the water, which contaminates the water and eventually enters the food chain and is consumed by humans. Another problem mentioned is how one vessel attracted an organism that ended up killing a nearby coral reef.

This is an environmental problem that needs to be addressed internationally, but little is being done. Owners of these ships are usually only fined about $100 for abandoning their ship, which is much less money than it would cost to recover the ship and have it dismantled properly. The government is taking steps to clean up the mess at the taxpayer’s expense, but I think that the shipowners need to be held more financially accountable, and not force the taxpayer to clean up THEIR mess. I think that if you can’t afford to pay the piper, then you shouldn’t go to the dance!

Recycling solvents

I am a big fan of reduce, reuse, and recycle.  I try to encourage everyone to do everything they can to reduce their own personal pollution output.  I think that if everyone chipped in and did their parts, we could help keep this earth “livable” for a long time.  I do find, however, that there are a lot of people who resist doing anything to keep the earth clean.  Some of them even go so far as to pollute on purpose, out of some kind of defiance.  I think those people probably suffer from Oppositional Defiance Disorder or something like that.  That’s really a shame, too.

One thing that businesses can do to help is to get involved in Solvent Recovery.  Instead of just dumping their solvents and wastes, they can purchase either a Solvent Recovery System or a Waste Recovery System.  I recently learned from the nexgenenviro.com website that a lot of industries that are generally thought of as “clean” actually generate wastes that can be recycled.  I think that solvent recovery is a great idea!  I hope that more companies get actively involved in that type of recycling!

Getting rid of those nasty plastic water bottles

I’ve been reading a lot of articles, and seeing a lot of news stories on television about how bad plastic water bottles are -both for the environment and for our health.  The plastic water bottles are filling up our landfills, and toxins from the plastic leach into the water.  I’ve been looking for a better solution, and I have finally found one on the Internet being sold by allyourgreen.com – a stainless steel water bottleKleen Kanteen water bottles come in several different sizes, ranging from 12 oz to 40 oz.  The bottles are dishwasher safe and they give the consumer a choice of three different types of tops – sports bottle, flat cap, or loop cap.

Going green for sure

Everyday I try to do something more to help the World around me, and I think this month I am going to go buy some CFL light bulbs to use as replacement bulbs when my incandescent bulbs burn out.

Saving energy is good for lowering our electric bill, and good for preserving the earth’s environment.  We all need to do our part to help!
