California to lay off state employees?

I was hearing that Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed an order to lay off 22,000 California state employees, and cut the pay of 200,000 more to minimum wage.  That is quite an action!  I was reading on the LATimes.com website that this is just a temporary measure until the state government approves a budget for the coming year.  It’s unfortunate that he had to take such an action!  Maybe that will motivate them to get it approved!

HIV travel ban to be lifted soon

I did not know that there was a twenty year ban on people who tested HIV positive traveling or immigrating from other countries into the United States!  I was just reading on the Time website that there are a dozen countries that ban HIV positive people from traveling into their countries.  I was really surprised to learn about the ban, and really glad to hear that it will probably be lifted soon.  Having said that, it will take an act of Congress to lift the ban!  There is supposed to be a vote on that this week.  It will be interesting to see if it passes.

Supreme Court rules in favor of Guantanamo Bay inmate

I was reading the BBC website about a story about the Supreme Court and a Guantanamo Bay inmate that has challenged why he has been held in Guantanamo Bay without a trial for so long, being classified as an “enemy combatant.”  Apparently this man has proven to the Supreme Court that he is NO an “enemy combatant” and the US is going to have to release him.  Of course, many people are upset about this; I happen to feel that these people should be given some kind of trial, not just thrown into what is essentially a prison of war camp.  I think it is shameful what the US has done during this war.  We CLAIM that we don’t use torture, but we all know torture is used.  Sometimes it is easy to understand how many people can hate the American country.

Now I expect the campaigns will get more negative.

Presidential election campaigns always get very negative once it becomes clear who is actually running.  I know that the candidates claim that they abhor the negative ads, but the negative ads flourish and draw so much controversy and attention that it makes me nauseous just to even think about how many negative ads we are going to have to tolerate this election year!  Wouldn’t it be wonderful if television stations refused to run them!

“Good game”

I heard Hillary’s speech last night, and I am frankly impressed how gracefully and tactfully she was handling the news that Obama has enough delegates to get the Democratic Presidential nomination.  It looked and sounded to me like she was saying “good game.”  I was taught as a child, that when you lose a competition, you need to be a good sport and say “good game.”  You don’t have to make a big deal out of who won or lost, you simply say “good game.”  That seemed to me what Hillary said last night.  I am really surprised that so many people are making a huge deal over how she did not “acknowledge” that she lost.  It seemed to me that is exactly what she was saying.  It’s too bad so many people can’t understand grace and tact.

I admire Hillary’s endurance, her spunk, and her good sportsmanship.  Good game.
